What Does Good Nutrition Mean To You?
Good nutrition means different things depending on your lifestyle or your goals.
It might mean eating foods that have the most nutrients or antioxidant-rich foods. It might mean eating gluten-free, Vegan, or Paleo- the list is long.
Everyone's goals are not the same. If you love junk food, eating healthy isn't your top priority. Or maybe having the longest lifespan possible isn’t a top goal for you. I get it…different strokes for different folks and we all make our own choices.
What is Good Nutrition For Me?
I eat pretty clean (minimally processed foods)…
No, I am not perfect and I do love my bread and yes, my mint chocolate chip ice cream on occasion. And all the Christmastime favorites. But when it's not the holidays, I’m pretty consistent with eating Paleo style.
What does that mean and why do I follow these guidelines?
Foods You Can Eat on the Paleo Diet
Meat & Seafood. Meat is a source of lean protein, and protein is the building block of all cells and tissues. ...
Grass-fed meat is recommended on the paleo diet. It is leaner than meat from grain-fed animals and has more omega-3 fatty acids. These healthy fats reduce inflammation in the body and protect your heart.
Fruits & Vegetables. There is little argument over the health benefits of fruits and vegetables. ... If you’re on a weight loss plan, limit the number of bananas. They are high in sugar and if watching blood sugar levels, limit the potatoes since they’re starchy.
Eggs. Another great source of protein with omega-3s. Choose organic, free-range whenever possible.
Nuts, Seeds & Healthy Oils. Nuts and seeds are a great snack. And cooking with oils can be tricky on the Paleo plan but olive, walnut, flaxseed, macadamia, avocado, and coconut oils are all allowed.
Why Do I Follow These Guidelines?
A few years back, I was having a pain in my gut, feeling lethargic, and itchy skin. I decided to go to a Naturopath since I’m not so big on Western Med doctors.
The testing for food allergies came back that I am sensitive to wheat, rye, concentrated sugars, dairy, and soy. My first thought was - how in the heck am I going to stick to this strict of a diet and what will I eat?
My first month, I used the Mediterranean diet which consisted of meat and veggies. The benefit was that I lost 10 lbs and the not so great benefit is that I lost 10lbs. I felt tired and cranky and didn’t look very healthy.
So, went back to the drawing board. I began experimenting with alternative flours since I loved baked goods. I discovered that almond flour and coconut flours produce bread and other pastries and pancakes that I enjoyed. The texture is a bit different, but I got used to the change easily.
What to Do as an Alternative to Concentrated Sugars?
After researching, I found the best sugar alternative is a coconut sugar that is not refined. It is a 1:1 substitute and has a nice slight caramel taste to it.
Oils were not an issue as far as my food sensitivities, but I knew that the standard oils were full of trans fats. In other words - not good for the heart or the waistline. So, I now cook with olive oil and coconut oil which is my go-to oil for so many different applications. More about that on an upcoming blog.
Another reason why I follow good nutritional habit is I have a desire to live a long and genuinely happy life. I want to contribute to helping my clients improve the quality of their lives by moving better. I want to increase their confidence by helping them get stronger, improve their balance, and get back to enjoying life again. I feel that they’re my God-driven purpose for my life. They need me to get strong and healthy and to be there to support them mentally, physically, and spiritually. And I love it.
After I had started eating clean, I had noticed my chronic bronchitis going away. Also, colds and flu are completely nonexistent. These benefits along with so much more energy are priceless in so many ways!
